I had the opportunity to be in Istanbul this summer. We had a 22 hour layover and spent the night in Fatih, Istanbul’s historic old town area. The building above was a mosque at one time, but it now houses a carpet museum, filled with hand-made area rugs from Turkey and I imagine other places as well. I don’t know because it was closed by the time I got there on a Sunday evening and it was also closed Mondays – the only morning I had in Istanbul. I’m sorry I missed it.
I sat outside a mosque during prayer, curious to see what goes on there. A typical Muslim mosque is filled with beautiful hand made rugs, laid out wall to wall. How do they keep them clean for years when there is so much traffic. The answer was plain to see. Everyone who enters first removes their shoes. Mosques have a shoes-off policy.
The picture on the right is a tourist gift shop, which included many hand made Turkish carpets. Actually, there’s no way to be sure they’re hand made. The fact that a carpet weaver is working in the store does not mean the carpets in the store are made by her. I was told by our host that there’s a lot of scamming going on with Turkish rugs. In fact, she was selling rugs for her AirBnB guests. They were clearly machine made synthetic rugs, probably made in China, but apparently were authentic enough for many of her guests.
Maintaining Hand Made Area Rugs
A Turkish Hand Made Area Rug is a work of art that should last generations – and it will if it is maintained. That means regular vacuuming and professional cleaning area rugs so colors don’t run and water does not damage them. We use the Host Dry Extraction cleaning system for natural fiber rugs. We use gentle brushes to work the Host micro-sponges against the carpet fibers, transferring soil to the micro-sponges. Once we’ve vacuumed the rug, the carpet is left clean and dry. The system is one of our two environmentally safe, green cleaning methods.
Since very little water is used, we don’t have the danger of slow drying, resulting in mold and mildew. The rich colors of Turkish rugs do not run, a disaster that can happen with steam cleaning (hot water extraction cleaning). With Host Dry cleaning, you can be sure your Persian carpet, Turkish rug or other wool area rug will last a lifetime and beyond.
